FOCUS: Allen Vincula Concordia

Allen is from Batch Vincula Concordia (my batch) he was a force behind us that hold us together and when we where thinking of quiting he was there to stop us. He was then going to MCU not for the subjects but just to finished being a MEDICUS, then he left and went to the US.

I have funny memories of Allen, he was the one who showed me that for 10 pesos you can have a lot for lunch ending up with LBM (buying 10 pesos worth of "sinangag na mani at gatas at that time"). When our New Dean at that time (Dean Quito) went to see the class and gave an inspirational message about being a doctor. Me and Allen embrace it enthusiastically, that both of us were called to stand up and explained what we where discussing together. I said that it seems to me then, that the end does not justify the means of being an MD (which is what she was saying) and Allen followed it up and told Dra. Quito that she was the most inspirational persona that ever talked to us (as if i do not know what we where talking then).

After the Final Acceptance Ceremonies, he left MCU and went to California to finally be with his parents. The last time that I met Allen was in 1985, he came home from the US and came to visit, not sure whether to continue with his studies or be with his family. A year later he sent a picture to Alon wearing BDU and is is training to be a Marine or so I thought.  He found us after all those years through our BLOG, and he send the email that I posted here.

When I left for the States in 86 (or was it 87?), I contemplated on going to medschool. But after I watched my mom and dad drag themselves to work everyday, I decided that would be the wrong thing to do. I enlisted in the Navy at San Diego . Nahalata yata ng Navy na marunong akong magbasa at mag-ganchillo kaya pinag-aral ako sa graduate school (UC San Diego 90). There, I received my MPH – Masters in Public Health.

In 91, I received my commission in the Navy Medical Service Corps with specialty focused on Industrial Hygiene. From there, followed a series of many other duty stations (moving every three years). Currently, I am with the Navy Environmental; Preventive Medicine. We basically own the Pacific when it comes to military public health (from bird flu surveillance to pandemic influenza, any types of disease outbreaks). We’re basically the 911 of Navy Medicine in the Pacific.

I have been back to the Philippines many times, and on a few occasions out to Mindanao; Bicol on humanitarian assistance missions to the Philippine Government. I have been taken away from my technical job at iginapos na ko sa desk to do executive medicine. Para na lang akong politician sa Pinas na nag shu-shuffle ng papel araw araw at naghihintay ng suhol. The Navy has been very good to me through the years.

I married a Hawaii grown Pinay whom I met in the Navy and was formerly a Nurse Corps officer. She’s a family nurse practitioner, and we have two kids (11; 9).

I laughed when you mentioned the script about Sampung Ahas ni Eba! (allen wrote the script on this one) I vaguely remember. Tanda ko nag present tayo nung graduation where I played Allen Bola (Helen Bola?). Tanda ko rin na I was awarded as the most hated Bata (tama ba yung title?). (You know I’m laughing while I’m writing this dahil nag flow back yung memories about our days). Vivid pa rin sa memory ko yung pinatayo kaming dalawa ni Sam face to face ni Cesar sabay sabing ‘mahal kita Sam’ then it was his turn to return the favor sabay sabing ‘mahal kita Allen”. Yun napamahal tuloy ng husto si Sam sa puso ko!

Tanda na tayo ‘dre! Papabotox muna ko bako mag padala ng picture para naman maunat ng konti. Seriously, I’ll put together some pictures from the Phils. from my last humanitarian mission there last year and I’ll send them to you. Meanwhile, balita mo na lang sa mga brods/sis na we stumbled on each other – I’d appreciate if we could link up on email. Lintek na Archie yan – titi ang hinahanap nun sa Pinas.

This was a blog entry a while back then intentionally put on hold for some reason. Perhaps it has been awhile and I have not heard from Allen again in a while. The last who saw him was Ceasar Dayahan in Hawaii in 2002. I went to Hawaii in 2003 but we never met or even talked. Hopefully time will come that I will see my brother again.

Twelve Things To Do to Reduce the Risk of Cancer

The new European Code Against Cancer outlines twelve (12) things that individuals can do to reduce their risk for cancer.  The code was drawn up by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a specialized agency of the World Health Organization and with the participation of the European Commission.  This 2014 version updates the last version of the code issued in 2003.

Highlights:

1.  Advice on checking and taking action on high levels of naturally-occurring radon in homes (associated with increased risk of lung cancer) and the avoidance of sunbeds and tanning equipment (risk of skin cancer).

2.  Advice to women that breast-feeding reduces the mother’s cancer risk, so should encouraged and that HRT (hormone-replacement therapy) increases the risk of for certain cancers (breast, endometrial, and ovarian) and so should be limited.  “The scientific evidence is there now to support these recommendations.” – Dr. Schuz

3.  Advice to have girls vaccinated against HPV (human papillomavirus) to prevent cervical cancer; in addition to the advice already in the code to have newborns vaccinated against Hepatitis B (to prevent liver cancer).

4.  Maintain a healthy bodyweight as there is a “gradual relationship between body weight and cancer, where small increases in body weight are associated with a small increase in the risk for cancer, but larger increases are associated with a larger increase in risk.”

“THE MORE OBESE YOU ARE, THE GREATER THE RISK.”

5. Advice on the emphasis on organized screening programs; for colorectal cancer in both men and women and for breast and cervical cancer screening in women.

6.  Dr. Schuz – “BE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE IN EVERYDAY LIFE.  LIMIT THE TIME YOU SPEND SITTING.”

EUROPEAN CODE AGAINST CANCER:  12 WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR CANCER RISK

1.     Do not smoke.  Do not use any form of tobacco.

2.     Make your home smoke free.  Support smoke-free policies in your workplace.

3.     Take action to be in a healthy body weight.

4.     Be physically active in everyday life. Limit the time you spend sitting.

5.     Have a healthy diet:

a.    Eat plenty of whole grains, vegetables and fruits.

b.    Limit high-calorie food (food high in sugar or fat) and avoid sugary drinks.

c.    Avoid processes meat; limit red meats and food high in salt.

6.     If you drink alcohol of any type, limit your intake.  Not drinking alcohol is better for cancer prevention.

7.     Avoid too much sun, especially for children.  Use sun protection.  Do not use sunbeds.

8.     In the workplace, protect yourself against cancer-causing substances by following health and safety instructions.

9.     Find out if you are exposed to radiation from naturally high radon levels in your home.  Take action to reduce high radon levels.

10. For women:

a.    Breast-feeding reduces the mother’s cancer risk.  If you can, breast-feed your baby.

b.    HRT(hormone-replacement therapies) increases the risk of certain cancers.  Limit use of HRT.

11. Ensure your children take part in vaccination programs for:

a.    Hepatitis B for newborns

b.    HPV girls

12. Take part in organized cancer screening programs for:

a.    Bowel cancer (men and women)

b.    Breast cancer (women)

c.    Cervical Cancer (women)

Medicus in Las Vegas 2015

Brods and Sis we are planning to get together next year , March 2015 in Las Vegas.

Everybody is invited, Medicus, "medicus-in-laws" and friends . Tentative date is 3rd weekend of march 20/21.  It is a week before Easter and open to discussion and will have definite decision this month.  So we have 6 months to ask for a day off/ vacation in advance.  We are getting a vacation place where we can party the Meriendicus way, with our family of course. 

Also, it's a birthday celebration ng mga March celebrants; si kuya tanny , si ate monet/ husband kuya ron, and my beautiful kasambahay cathy.  Kaya free all inclusive buffet tayo.  Baka may gusto maki sabay ng birthday, it's open.  Our brod/sis home are also open for free accomodation, everybody is welcome magdala lang kayo ng sleeping bag!

As per invitation of Kuya Cesario Dayahan, for the preparations we need a head count.  Please take the poll if you are going to the March 20/21 LAS VEGAS Medicus Get-Together. 

The date is still tentative and the floor is open for any suggestions and discussion.

EDSA 1986

The People Power Revolution (also known as the EDSA Revolution and the Philippine Revolution of 1986) was a series of nonviolent and prayerful, mass street demonstrations in the Philippines that occurred in 1986. It is sometimes referred to as the Yellow Revolution due to the presence of yellow ribbons during the arrival of Ninoy Aquino. (remember the song "Tie A Yellow Ribbon") These protests were the culmination of a long resistance by the people against the 20 year running authoritarian regime of then current president Ferdinand Marcos and made news headlines as "the revolution that surprised the world". The majority of the demonstrations took place at Epifanio de los Santos Avenue between Camp Aguinaldo and Camp Crame up to Green Hills area, known more commonly by its acronym EDSA, in Quezon City. Other parts of Metropolitan Manila was also involved and an actively revolving mass of people were going from place to place, this includes areas around Channel 4, Channel 7 areas, the vicinity of Malacañang to include Mendiola bridge, and involved millions of Filipino civilians as well as several political, military, and religious figures, such as Jaime Cardinal Sin.
The protests, fueled by a resistance and opposition of years of corrupt governance by Marcos, occurred from February 22 to 25 in 1986, when Marcos fled Malacañang Palace to the United States and conceded to Corazon Aquino as president of the Philippines. Our EDSA revolution gave a blueprint for the modern non violent revolution and was now sweeping across the Middle East. A revolution by the people wanting freedom from oppression and repression by a government that only catered to a few.
MEDICUS was a part of this revolution and fight for freedom, and our story was never told.
February 22, 1986 Saturday: Medicus members went to a Medical Mission near the Nescaffe factory at Muntinlupa, it was a very fruitful day treating patients. I am a 2nd year medical student then and we did the minor surgical part including circumcisions. Max was our team leader being a 3rd year. There were other several seniors that were guiding us, lunch time was vegetarian. As I remember at 4 pm we have seen the last patient and started to pack our things. It is almost 5 pm when we reached the highway along Paranaque. We saw several military tanks parked on the side of the highway going into Makati. We did not see any problem then and we continued on our way to Caloocan via EDSA. When we reached EDSA in front of Camp Crame, we saw several hundred demonstrators with their placards, we were able to pass through without any problem and continued to Caloocan. Joel Mendoza who lives at Kamias decides to get off at Kamias and went back to stay around Crame and see what's going on. The rest of the group went to MCU, embarked, and went home.
Unknown to us at about 6:30pm, February 22, Enrile and Ramos held a press conference at Camp Aguinaldo, where they announced that they have resigned their positions on Marcos's cabinet and are withdrawing support from his government. Apparently a supposed "coup de etat"by RAM spearheaded by DND personel was foiled early that day by the Marcos government around the Malacanang area. Cardinal Sin went on the radio and called for the people to protect these soldiers from harm that night. He asked the people to surround the areas of Camp Aguinaldo and Camp Crame and serve as buffer so that government forces could not attack. That night people who were holding rallies around Malacañang and other areas trickled down to EDSA in front of the two camps. In the morning people from all over Metro Manila from all walks of life rich and poor, the religious and the not so religious, the "inteligencia" and laborers came and lend a hand. "Kapit Bisig" in front of the camps.

February 23, 1986 Sunday: It is now known that we have a "coup de etat" going on. Joel called several MEDICUS members early that day and updated us on what was going on around Crame. We also heard from the radio that night, that Cardinal Sin was calling for people to support Enrile and Ramos (they were the leaders of a coup de etat). We called other Vincula and asked each other if we will participate in this protest. Me(Alex,) Edwin, Alon, Vic, Joel, Mario, Gilbert, Cris, and the rest of Vincula decides that we will. I remember Alon saying " what will you tell your children or grandchildren when they asked you "nasaan kayo noong EDSA revolution"? We decide to go.

Me and Edwin rode a jeep to Cubao with out water canteens, flashlights, sandwich and jackets (we're ready to spend the night) and from there walked to Santolan. We got there before 9 am and met with Joel, Alon, Vic and some other MEDICUS members. Ramos and Enrile decides to consolidate their position. Enrile with the RAM boys decides to go to Crame which is easier to defend than Aguinaldo. We saw them walking and crossing EDSA.
At lunch time we saw other MCU students from different MCU organization and was informed that MCU doctors were also on their way to provide medical help if necessary and to be a part of the protest under the DOCTORS for CORY banner. Someone with a Volkswagen Combi was there with a tarpaulin and we started building a tent on the corner of EDSA and Santolan. The place used to be a motor shop but was close at that time. The people living in the house above the "talyer" allowed us and welcomed us to stay in front of the house and they gave us water. When the tent was finished, we contribute with what money we have and start buying supplies and calling other brods and sis to bring supplies and equipment that we used mostly for our medical missions. An MCU ambulance came with MCU MD's and this tent becomes the headquarters for the MCU contingent at EDSA. Some doctors from MCU brought medications, sutures, IV's and surgical equipment with them and added to the pool. We made makeshift red cross arm bands out of Marios's (Mario Lopez) lab gown. Armed with first aid equipments we start to do foot patrol around the area ready to give first aid. At 2 pm a lot of "ralyista" coming from different directions of Metro Manila gathered where we were. The road was closed and no cars can pass, we also have our first case. A lady collapsed near Cubao and nobody can reach her, since the roads were now closed.
We were young and full of energy, we grab a gurney and tried to run near Cubao to help the lady in need. Halfway to Cubao that gurney feels like a refrigerator, it was so heavy that we are having a hard time holding on to it. We got to the lady, after what seems to be hours. We put her on the gurney and tried to run back, but we were so tired it ended in a walk back to the camp near Santolan. She was dehydrated, an IV was started and after a few minutes she was up.
The MCU medical unit treated everyone that needs help. We met an old man coming from the Visayas region with a big wound on his foot, he got it from stepping on a broken glass in one of the protest marches. He was in Manila participating on the protest for several days and did not have the money for the wound to be taken care off. He was taken care off at that time and no one asked for any payment or for anything in return. Everything was freely given if it is needed, sometimes even when it is not needed. People who do not know each other gave each other food and water no questions asked. You can see people who do not know each other splitting a little sandwich and sharing drinking from a single cup. We slept that night on that makeshift camp, with newspapers as our beds and cockroaches as our alarm. Side by side people were ready to give and make the ultimate sacrifice for a belief that we are fighting for our freedom, for our children's freedom and that tomorrow will be a better day.

February 24, Monday: I woke up at 2 am after 2 hrs of sleep, only to be told that we are needed at the Santolan going to Libis as the Marines were trying to breach that area. When we got there tear gas was everywhere. People were pulling back, then pushed back as the Marines pulled back after a brief scuffle. First aid was rendered to those who need it. With watering eyes, coughing and in need of help ourselves. We helped those that we can reach and pulled them out of the area.
We want back to the camp and rest. At 5 am I saw an elderly couple driving their van. They stopped across our camp and started to make a fire, with firewood that they brought and boiled water on a big kettle. They made coffee in the middle of EDSA and anyone who want a cup can have one until the whole drum of coffee was gone. They said that it is their small contribution to the cause, they cannot shed blood and life but they can give coffee. A coffee that was very welcome after a sleepless cold night.
Later, during that morning we saw helicopters coming to EDSA. Everyone was tense, thinking that this is it, blood will be spilled all over the place. As it was thought that General Ver ordered an attack that day. Then shouts rung as the helicopters landed inside the camp and unloaded military supplies to the rebels. It turned out to be the 15th Air Force Strike Wing, led by Major General Antonio Sotelo who went to side with the rebel forces.

By lunch time there was a festive spirit. Some MCU students came and then disappear but we were still there. People were donating to our camp, giving food and money to buy medicines. Someone donates 3 crates of fresh egg and up to now I do not know what happen to those eggs (we have no way of cooking those eggs).
February 25, Tuesday: We woke up from our naps that morning thinking that another attack is imminent. I found the old couple again, giving away coffee. The team stays and tried to give help who ever needs help. Cory was inducted as the President and Marcos did the same in Malacanang. I went home to get new clothes and bathe. At 9 pm that day Marcos left Malacang. I was at home taking a bath and getting ready to go back to EDSA, but then decide not to since Marcos left.

On Valentine's Day 1987

It was 06:45 on a cold February morning and I was late (it was not easy coming from Sampaloc). Most of the brods were already working at their corresponding assignments. It was February 14, 1987 birthday of Angel and Val (that's why his name is valentino), it was Valentine's day. Members of Medici Omnes Duciens fraternity was very busy and were very early at MCU, some were there before 7 in the morning which was the usual time for most of the morning class. Me and Edwin were always 5 - 10 minutes late on our class but on this day we were at MCU by 06:45 (again late, we need to be there before 06:30). Our sorority sisters were already there, they were also early and very busy. They were giving instructions regarding the placement and arrangement of tables in front of Anatomy Building, at the Caloocan Campus. Red Roses were already arranged neatly on the tables (the flowers were there around 06:30 1/2 jeep-full). It was the Rose Sale of the Medici Omnes Duciens Sorority. Our sorority sisters were in charge of selling these roses, and it was the fraternity's job to distribute roses that were sold to their recipients. Me and Edwin had one delivery each to do before going to class. Distribution of the roses includes the whole MCU Caloocan Campus, and sometimes even out of campus to the sorrounding dorms (even solar is included, preferably during happy hour, darn ricky).

The Rose Sale was a project of the Sorority, the fraternity was only in support of this project. Every year since 1987 it was the project of Medicus Sorority to provide and sell roses in conjuction with the celebration of Valentines day at MCU Caloocan. Several weeks before Valentine's, orders were already being reserved and every year all the flowers were always sold out (if not brods need to buy them and give it to whom ever they wanted to or else you got one nipple pinch from monette, and that hurts).

I do not know if this event still goes on, but it was the Medicus Sorority Members who started it at MCU. The beggining of this Rose sale started during our probation period. Our seniors, will always asked us to buy roses to be given to several Medicus advisers, to their girlfriends or to anyone that they like for one reason or another. Even after we were already full Medicus members, we were always asked to buy roses. This was probably due to our proximity at Dangwa which was the drop off point for flowers and our friendship with Manila Flower Shop. So when Dum Spero Spera became the OC of sorority it was decided to make this event a project of the Sorority. Thus, the Medicus Rose Sale begins.

Christmas

Christmas, also referred to as Christmas Day or Christmastide, is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25 that marks and honors the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. His birth, which is the basis for the Anno Domini system of dating, has been determined by modern historians as having occurred between 7 and 2 BC. The date of celebration is not thought to be Jesus' actual date of birth. It may have been chosen to coincide with the winter solstice, which the ancient Romans celebrated on December 25.

Modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, church celebrations, and the display of various decorations—including the Christmas tree, lights, mistletoe, nativity scenes and holly. Santa Claus (also referred to as Father Christmas, although the two figures have different origins) is a popular mythological figure often associated with bringing gifts at Christmas. Santa is generally believed to be the result of a syncretization between St. Nicholas of Myra and elements from pagan Nordic and Christian mythology, and his modern appearance is believed to have originated in 19th century media.

For many centuries, Christian writers accepted that Christmas was the actual date on which Jesus was born. In the early eighteenth century, scholars began proposing alternative explanations. Isaac Newton argued that the date of Christmas was selected to correspond with the winter solstice, which in ancient times was marked on December 25. In 1743, German Protestant Paul Ernst Jablonski argued Christmas was placed on December 25 to correspond with the Roman solar holiday Dies Natalis Solis Invicti and was therefore a "paganization" that debased the true church. In 1889, Louis Duchesne suggested that the date of Christmas was calculated as nine months after March 25, the traditional date of the conception of Jesus. On the Roman calendar, March 25 was the date of the spring equinox. In modern times, it is celebrated as Annunciation.

The earliest reference to the celebration of the nativity on December 25 is found in the Chronography of 354, an illuminated manuscript compiled in Rome in 354. In the East, early Christians celebrated the birth of Christ as part of Epiphany (January 6), although this festival focused on the baptism of Jesus. Christmas was promoted in the Christian East as part of the revival of Catholicism following the death of the pro-Arian Emperor Valens at the Battle of Adrianople in 378. The feast was introduced to Constantinople in 379, and to Antioch in about 380. The feast disappeared after Gregory of Nazianzus resigned as bishop in 381, although it was reintroduced by John Chrysostom in about 400.

The Twelve Days of Christmas, and the associated evenings of those twelve days (Twelve-tide), are the festive days beginning the evening of Christmas Day (December 25) through the morning of Epiphany (January 6). The associated evenings of the twelve days begin on the evening before the specified day. Thus, the first night of Christmas is December 25–26, and Twelfth Night is January 5–6. This period is also known as Christmastide. December 26 is St. Stephen's Day and January 6 is Feast of Epiphany This period encompasses the major feasts surrounding the birth of Christ. In the Latin Rite, one week after Christmas Day, January 1, has traditionally been the celebration the Feast of the Naming and Circumcision of Christ, but since Vatican II, this feast has been celebrated as the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.

Sportsfest Open Medicus Week Celebration (1986)

CHEERS to the CIA (rerum internarum) for a job well done!

August 23, 1986, Saturday, 9:00 AM, marked the traditional MEDICUS Sports fest which was participated by both the old and the new dedicated members of the Organization.... Another way of organizing themselves into a more cohesive group. Among those present was the original Magister Totus himself, Angel Araneta who brought along his MEDICUS Daughter, Patricia, with him.

Games like the obstacle relay, breaking the egg, 100 meter dash, marathon, Tug O' war summed up both fun and excitement truly enjoyed by everyone. Results showed the RED team being the over all winner, followed by the BLACK and the WHITE teams as second and third, respectively. Trophies were awarded to the respective winners during the Foundation Night held at the Hyatt Regency last August 30, 1986.

At this point, we wish to thank all the members of the CIA for the success of the sports fest. It was indeed, a job well-done; and to the winners, Congratulations to you all. See you next sports fest!

(it happened 22 years ago. the write up was writen by our Sis Rochie Marcelo and published in our NEWSLETTER of 1986. the picture was taken by Arnel Bondoc standing on the roof outside of the AV Patho room, he went through the window. a security guard saw him and brought him down. there were more members that day but not everyone end up in the picture. these were the shy members who managed to be there at the right moment. there was no picture on the NEWSLETTER. i just combined the two. you will note on the picture that Angel Araneta was carrying his angel. agp 107)
