25th Anniversary Celebration

Today is the day that a lot were waiting for; the celebration for the 25th Year of the founding of Medici Omnes Duciens. I have been trying to think of something for the celebration but nothing comes out of my curdled idle brain for 2 weeks now. Butch asked me to post or send him videos of brods and sis here in the US to show during the party. I tried, but our brods and sis were mostly camera shy, thus nothing comes out of this. I hope that during the party someone could think of taking pictures as the celebration unfolds. So that for the rest of us who dream of being there but could not make it, will see and feel the celebration.

Dr Dayrit once said that Medicus will die the natural way just like the old organizations that were once founded at MCU (eg. INVICTUS), but I think our 25th celebration proves that MEDICUS will not be another case. We will not die a natural death, we will linger, survive and multiply. This is so because, each member strive to bring Medicus to life, that is something that they (other organizations) do not have.

When I joined Medicus a few years ago (like 22 years ago) I said to myself this is just another school organization. I would be on the background and a member in name only and as much as I could, I will be inactive. It did not happened that way, because Medicus is you or me. It is not just an organization it becomes our way of life. Medicus gives me a family outside of my family. It gives me the joy of living as a medical student. It gives me all the best friends that I could ever asked. I could not imagine being in MCU medicine without Medicus, without the practical jokes that we always had to watch out for, lest you be the subject of the joke.

If I am not a Medicus , there would not be Mabuhay happening, imburnal incident, EDSA 1, Near drowning at Anilao, the isla sombrero storm, endless bottles of beer, sleeping at West Ave (dahil walang pamasahe), island hopping in 100 islands, near accident at Olongapo and a lot more to mention. Do you know how boring life would be for me? Almost 90% of the fun that I have in life, MEDICUS is there in one way or another. I will continue to have fun in life and will always have my brods and sis. And for all of these thank you MEDICUS, HAPPY 25th ANNIVERSARY too.

Medicus Band Part 2

Medicus Band suddenly appears in the College of Medicine at Manila Central University in the middle of the 1980's. Students specially those in the Bachelor of Science Colleges become a fan (and mostly girls). If MEDICUS Band suddenly appears from nowhere, they slowly fade away. During the time that some of the members of Medicus band went to their clerkship. It becomes harder to see each other more so to set up a practice date. Medicus band performs less, despite invitations to do so in school functions. For the members who were on their clerkship it was a very busy period. They were scattered all over Metro Manila within their respective hospital assignments. The third years were now busy with more loads in their studies. There was no new member that joined the band. There was also not enough members left, who knew how to play instruments except for Archie, Gilbert and Ronald (dollar). Since then, the band seldom performs. Still, invitations to perform were abundant and in this regard members who can say no to them, decides to perform by themselves or whoever member they can scrounge. In one occasion Archie decides to perform and go solo on the guitar. It just doesn't sound right with only an instrument, so Manny decides to do the vocals. In this video of their performance in one of the many parties where Medicus band performs ( I do not know if this is a Medicus party or not), Manny did the vocals that adds spice to the performance and Archie on the guitar (which he loves doing anyway, guess how many guitars he have?) looking like a Spandau Ballet. This is a little bit of Spandau admixed with a little bit of a tribal appearance (that's how flexible medicus members were).

25th Anniversary

Today is the 24th of December 5 days before the 25th anniversary celebration. A countdown is started 5 days before our party. I hope a lot were getting ready for it. Christmas will come first so Merry Christmas.

Final Acceptance 2003

This picture were taken in 2003 on the event of the final acceptance of Credo Magnus Perficio. There were 3 founding members that was present in this event. It is usually seldom to see 2 founding members in one event, seldom that it happens, but there were 3 during this event. Another first was May Eudela of Primavera Internos was also there, she was also a hard one to find. The last time I saw May Eudela was when she was giving me demerits in 1984 on the 3rd floor of the MCU hospital. There were also other alumni who I'm sure travelled far to reach this event (Mc do and dollar to name a few). There were only few pictures of this event and Archie gave me a copy (bless his black heart). I made a slide show of the pictures and uploaded it to YouTube, just click the active link to watch it.

Slide show 1, the first one that was made but due to very limited number of pictures it is short. Slide show 2, same number of pictures but emphasis was given on members by differentiating them in color, making it a longer slide show.

Christmas Spirit

It is another year in a foreign country. I missed the Christmas spirit in the Philippines. Ang magulong midnight sales, sa Greenhills at sa kung saan saan, na kadalasan ay nauuwi sa pagbili ng hotdog on a stick. Ang mga rides sa may Manila bay, ang pakikipagsiksikan sa Tutuban at kung saan saan sa paghahanap ng murang pang regalo. Ang mga kakaibang regalo sa ating mga monito at monita. Ang mga taong kahit walang pera ay masaya na ikutan ng ikutan. Ang simbang gabi na kahit kailan ay hindi ko natapos simula lamang at ang katapusang misa. At higit sa lahat ang nalalapit nating 25th year Anniversary celebration, tuloy Christmas party at New Years party. How I wish na sana ay makapunta at makainuman kayong lahat. Batid ko rin na ang ating ibang kapatid na nasa ibang bansa ay nais na makasama at makasalamuha ang lahat na mga utols na pupunta. Sa lahat ng mga Brods at Sis nasa Pilipinas o nasa ibang bansa. Isang masayang pasko sa inyong lahat. At para sa lahat ng utol simula sa Founding members hangang sa pinkahuli sa listahan HAPPY 25TH Anniversary sa ating lahat. Nawa'y dumami tayong lalo at lalong lumakas ang kapatiran. Mula sa isang utol na nagmumukmok at walang kainuman ngayong pasko.

FOCUS: Shin

Shin Yong SUCK was a South Korean born in Seoul, Korea. He came to the Philippines and to MCU to study medicine, because it is too expensive for him to study medicine in his own country. Shin was very observant, he was always watching yet, he seldom talk or chit chat with anyone. Initially it was thought that he probably was a snob, no one approaches him for no one knows any other culture then, than ours. He was silent and was adamant to approach anyone, this was due to him having a hard time conversing fluently in English. He also admits that he does not have anyone that can be considered a friend at the time. When he saw that the majority of his classmates were joining Medicus he decides to join too, because he needs a friend. He got what he ask for and more, he got very unruly friends and brothers who always put a joke on each other. Shin was a victim of these jokes and he also gave some. Shin was the first foreigner to be inducted into Medicus, he had a hard time, but he stayed. He do not want to leave his batch mates, friends and eventually brothers. For Shin, the suffering and sacrifices is more than worth the brotherhood and friends that he got. I do not know where Shin is right now but I think he is doing fine and continued to pursue his goals and the goals of the brother hood that he left behind. Right after graduation Shin went back to Korea and we never heard from him since then. I still remember him saying to me in one of our heart to heart talk (during our drinking to death sessions, just right after wipping his face with the rug that we wiped the table with) " I love Medicus and I will die for you my brothers if needed" and he mean it. Shin is the first one who taught me how to eat kimchi, and he made it himself.

Message from a founder: MEDICUS website

It was the start of another school year. Another beginning that have brought a tinge of fears and challenge to a third year medical student's heart. He was glad to be finally there, the seemingly last year of hard school work. But as he looked back, he felt that there must have been more to it than this new white V-neck uniform and another pile of books to read.

It was a time when students bore the weight of a certain identity, looking in pride and confidence. Was it enough to have gained the status of a Medical Student or was there more to this so - called symbol of excellence? Being and purpose, these were what was in everybody's mind that first a group of young hopefuls committed themselves to a cause, we now call - MEDICI OMNES DUCIENS.

The fraternity's existence was sparkled by a need to redirect the campus student's evolving picture of Men of Medicine. The objective of his labor had to be clear to him, to comprehend his vital essence in college and his eventual responsibilities as a physician.The formula was simple and relevant - DEDICATION, SERVICE AND BROTHERHOOD: three pillars that withstood time since that night in August of 1982.

It has been said " A man realizes how tall he is, when he needs the call to stand up". Our Fraternity and Sorority - call you today in the very same spirit it had been founded on. To this day, MEDICI OMNES DUCIENS, Has grown from dreams of thirteen men to a reality of more than 400 members. And yet the formula has remained the same since that feeling of every medical student to meet the challenge of his time and the needs of his people still perpetuate to this day.

MEDICUS distinguished and elevated pride from that which evolves from confidence and impels men and women to do their best. The greatest insult foisted on any man is to be called common. No one wishes to be common or remain common. In every heart beats the desire to become remarkable. That gives us a cutting edge to achievement and self-confidence.

FOCUS: Ghe and Avie

Francis Gerald "ghe" E. ADIAO of Unos Sanguinis and Salvie "avie" ROY-Adiao of Excellens In Omnes Actum, were friends, classmates, brod and sis, before being one as husband and wife. They now live in Nassau Bahamas, with their 3 children, all boys. Needless to say MEDICUS babies. Recently(as in within the year), Francis celebrated his 40th birthday and decided to send pictures of the event ( it is uploaded in Flickr, slide presentation soon to follow). Here it is, belated happy birthday tol from your brods and sis, and may you have many more (children, wala pang babae) birthdays to come.

Philippine Reunion October 2006

This may be old news but just to tell a story. When Archie went home in 2006, one Vincula called another and before you know it everyone available in Metro Manila agreed to meet. Vincula Concordia and Dum Spiro Spero meet and then keep on meeting 2 more times. Sometimes when you start telling stories you do not want it to end. This is one of those times. Seeing your brods and sis again after several years brings back the old, fun memories. It is nice to know that at least this time you can afford to do it in a restaurant other than Hua San. There were 2 pictures taken from 2 different times, on 2 different restaurants. Top picture: Val and Jen at the front, Bottom picture: right to left Art, Cris, Arnel, Archie, Grace, and Jen. A toast for Medicus.

Flickr Account

Mga Utol, brods and sis,


We now have a Pro Flickr account, we do not have a limit sa upload, upload as much as you want. I ended subscribing to it, dahil it is giving me a hard time organizing pictures, at sa upload limit na 100mb we need more. One of the problems before is that the memory available on free accounts is not enough, and we end up with several free accounts on different providers. Ngayon lahat ng mga pictures natin, specially ang mga nasa baul. Pwede na ninyong hukayin at i-upload. Kung may collection kayo ng mga old pictures natin scan ninyo and upload it. Pag mag lagay kayo ng pictures lagyan nyo ng tag na Medici Omnes Duciens at Manila Central University sa group tag. Tapos name the picture (kung ano gusto nyo) then describe something about the picture. From Flickr account pwedeng I padala yan sa blog natin medyo lumalabas nga lang na putol ang isang side pero pwede, although it is still better to upload pictures individually sa Blog para maganda. Lahat tayo may access sa Flickr and we can get it, pass it on, blog it if we want using the login name at password. Look at the side bar nandyan ang login at password. Medicus SoCal gathering

On November 4, 2007 Medicus members in Southern California held an impromptu get together. The Chairman of the Internal 1984-85 (Edwin Chua) came for a visit coming from Taiwan. Our brod Ceasar also held a belated birthday for him and his kids, thus making them the host of the event. Seven members with their families were there; Ceasar Dayahan, James Centeno (who came all the way from Las Vegas, Nevada), Edwin Chua, Elvis Verso, Chi Juico, Muriel 'Peewee" Manuel and yours truly Alex Pineda. The event was really nice, specially if you met someone you have not met for more than 20 years. Like long lost brothers and sisters we get drunk until the sun came down. A new slide presentation was posted above the post but you can still watcth the old slide show by clicking on the active link. Hope you'll enjoy it like we do.

Medicus Band

Medicus members have a lot of talents aside from being studious, resourceful, leaders, etc. Some members were also musically inclined. Thus, in the periods 0f 1985-87 a band was formed comprising of Medicus members. The first time I saw them performing was with Miss Medicine done at the Medical auditorium. During this performance Spike Ignacio was the vocalist and Dean Quito was so impressed with the performance, that she cannot help but talk to the band members afterward, specifically to Spike Ignacio. I remember her saying "Spike pag ginawa mo pa ulit ito ibabagsak kita". This was followed by a performance at the Miss MCU done at the MCU Caloocan Gym. The members varied from one performance to another. It includes Jorge 'Spike' Ignacio (vocals), Rhoderick 'Oknoy' Problete (vocals), Gilbert Quimosing (lead, rhythm), Elvis Verso (rhythm, backup vocals), Ricky Dela Cruz (keyboards, rhythm, vocals), Ronald 'Dollar' Fetalvero(bass), Archi Lumibao (drums, lead, rhythm), and Chi Juico (vocals) the only thorn among the roses. At the top of the page after the announcement is a video of one of their performance, wherein the vocalist was Oknoy. The quality of the video is not that good (there is no digital video then). The video came from the vault of Archie Lumibao. (Archie if there were mistakes on this post, send me an email so I can correct it).

Archie in the morning

I woke with a headache and it is 01:20 pm. I need to prepare myself for my duty tonight but the blog first. I am trying to load a flash program that was made by one of our Brod for Medicus a long time ago. Perhaps 5 or 6 years ago. But it would not load as a picture or as a video. After trying to load it several times it would not load as it is not supported. I think they are not using flash anymore. I will try to load another video see if it is working. This AVI was taken using a canon pro 1 camera that can take a 3 minute clip. This was taken at Art Onglao's House on December 12, 2004 when me and Archie went there to go fishing. Eyeball February 25, 2007

In February 26, 2007, me and Vic met at our sis house (Peewee) and have a nice get together just like oldtimes with news and jokes about each other, and lots of food. The commute is more than we expect especially when you think that you were lost. I will add some more pictures here at our blog and the rest will be sent through email. The other pictures were already uploaded to flickr. You will see again the beauty of our sister, one of the original "crush ng bayan".

Introduction

I have written a nice introduction for the blog, but unfortunately as luck would have it, it was lost perhaps due to my carelessness or because of the number of beer I have taken so far. I started to do this at midnight and it is now 3 o'clock in the morning. I am now upset because I have lost all the post that I just drafted, and I could not remember the password for the 1st Blog I made(and that one got the mediciomnesduciens name on it). Anyway, this is supposed to be an introduction on this blog that is about our fraternity and sorority. Our beloved Medici Omnes Duciens.

It has been 25 years since the founders started this organization. We have grown, became bigger, older and like a big family we tend to go to our own life's pursuits ending up far from each other. We were far because we grow and seek out what was meant for us, and because we follow the things that we set out to do. To make other peoples lives a little better, to make our lives better. Just like when this was started at MCU to make our lives as students a little better.

This is just a trial run and hope that we have a new media where we can express our wants and needs, to be able to connect with our brothers and sisters from all over the world. To connect again like we used to when we were students of medicine at MCU. To update our brothers and sisters regarding ourselves, including our whereabouts, our families and all the things we can think off.
